Abstract:

Over the last 20 years, there have been two seemingly disconnected developments in optical spectroscopy: frequency combs and multidimensional coherent spectroscopy. Frequency combs revolutionized optical frequency metrology and enabled optical atomic clocks while multidimensional coherent spectroscopy became a powerful tool for studying dynamics on ultrafast time scales in atomic, molecular and solid-state systems. Inspired by a method known as "dual comb spectroscopy", we have recently combined these two developments by demonstrating comb-based multidimensional coherent spectroscopy, which leverages the best aspects of both.

Biography:

Prof. Steven T. Cundiff received his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in 1985 and 1991, respectively. He worked as Fellow in JILA from 1999 to 2014, which is a joint institute of University of Colorado Boulder and NIST. Since 2015, he joined University of Michigan as Harrison M. Randall Collegiate Professor of Physics and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Prof. Steven T. Cundiff is a pioneer in the field of femtosecond laser generation and its application. He was elected as Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 2005, Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2006, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2014, and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2017. He received US Department of Commerce Bronze Medal in 2009, US Department of Commerce Silver Medal in 2013, Humboldt Research Award in 2010, and Meggers Award from the Optical Society of America in 2011. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed journal papers, including over 10 papers on international top journals in physics, e.g. Science, Nature, Nature Physics, Nature Communications, and Physical Review Letters. He has been serving as Associate Editor for various journals, e.g. Physical Review Letters, Optica. And He has been Chairs in various international conferences.
